Brewster loses to Canada but immediately sets sights on rematch

SCOTTISH skip Tom Brewster refused to be downbeat after a narrow defeat to unbeaten Canada at the World Curling Championships in Basle.

Brewster was buzzing after an impressive 7-4 victory over medal rivals Sweden but went down narrowly, just 7-5, to Glenn Howard's in-form rink.

However, just three defeats in nine matches leaves them well-placed in joint second on the overall standings and victories over the Czech Republic and the USA on Friday should set up another clash with Canada in the Page 1-2 game, the winner of which progresses to the final while the beaten rink moves into the semi-finals.

"I've beaten them in the past and they are not unbeatable here, despite the week they are having," insisted Brewster, a silver medallist 12 months ago to a Canadian team skipped by Jeff Stoughton.

"We had chances but we lost because a couple of shaky ends. I hope to play them again and you’ve just got to go out there and believe you can beat them.

"This was a tough game but we don’t really need to win against them till Sunday and the final."

Scotland should beat both their final round-robin rivals, who although out of the medal mix are still looking for vital Olympic qualifying points, while Canada can afford to lose both their remaining matches and still progress.
