WIMBLEDON 2012: Olympics doesn’t appear to rank high on Serena’s priorities

ANYONE in doubt about where the Olympics lies in the priorities for many tennis players should have listened to Serena Williams, shortly after she claimed her fifth Wimbledon title.

Asked if her win could be topped and if there was anything left for her to prove in the sport, she said: “Are you kidding? The US Open, the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon 2013.”

No mention of the Olympics, which starts in just over three weeks on the same All England Club lawns.

Williams already has two doubles gold medals, claimed in Athens and Beijing, along with sister Venus, who she also partnered to their fifth combined win in SW19.

Steffi Graf is the only women’s player to have won all four major tournaments and Olympics singles gold – she even did it in the same year – to complete a so-called Golden Slam.

So where was joining an exclusive club, that also includes Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi, on Wiiliams’s radar?

“I haven’t even thought about that yet. I was just trying to get through Wimbledon,” she added.

“You know, it would be awesome. For me a gold medal’s a gold medal. I’ve got one, so I’m really happy with it. I’ve got two actually.”

Sound convinced?
