GB MEN’S wheelchair basketball coach Murray Treseder was fuming despite his side getting off to a winning start at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.

SHARP SHOOTER: Jon Pollock racked up 18 points in the win over Germany at the BT Paralympic World Cup

The reigning European champions struggled in the same event a year ago when they were forced to settle for bronze but held on against Germany to record a 57-53 win thanks to 18 points from the returning Jon Pollock.

That win put Great Britain into a good position to make Saturday’s final ahead of tomorrow’s clash with USA but Treseder wants more from his players.

He said: “That was terrible, we should have won by 20 or 30 points so there is everything to work on.”

Pollock, who has been out injured for nine months, added: “It was going to be tough. They had done their homework and we had done ours. It was a battle of attrition out there. We came out on top, which is a good thing.”

While there was success for the British men, their female counterparts found life tougher against the reigning Paralympic champions USA, slipping to a 49-36 defeat.

The British ladies held their own with the world’s number one team in the opening quarter, trailing just 13-12 but in the end they could not stay with their illustrious opponents.

The bright spot for Britain was the performance of Amy Conroy who led the scoring with 23 points in an impressive display.

She said: “It was disappointing to lose, but the opposition came out fighting and they just performed better than us.

“They were aggressive from the start and quick and we need to be more like that. We will get better and make sure we bring everything we have got.”
