OLYMPICS LONDON 2012: Badminton draw fixers disqualified
EIGHT PLAYERS have been disqualified from the Olympics Badminton group stages after being accused of not trying.
The Badminton World Federation confirmed that four pairs of players – from China, Indonesia and two from South Korea – have been removed from the competition for “not using one’s best efforts to win” during their matches on Tuesday.
The women’s doubles players were investigated and charged after making numerous seemingly deliberate errors in an effort to fix more favourable quarter final fixtures, in front of a restless and booing crowd.
It was announced on Wednesday that the players, Chinese world champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, Indonesia’s Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari, and South Korean duos Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na, and Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min Jung, have been disqualified.
Paul Deighton, Chief Executive Officer of Locog, has confirmed that no refunds will be given to spectators of the badminton.
