Giuliani to advise Rio 2016 on security
FAILED US Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has got a new job with Rio 2016 - advising them on security.
NEW ROLE: Rudy Giuliani, dubbed America's Mayor for his leadership in the days after 9/11, is advising Rio on security
The former New York City mayor, who was beaten by Senator John McCain to the Republican presidential nomination last year, has been hired in a bid to calm fears about violence in the Brazilian city.
However, Giuliani's own political future is far from decided.
Last month he confirmed he would not run for Governor of New York although his name has been mentioned for a US Senate run next year, while others believe he could yet revive his presidential aspirations in 2012.
Therefore it's hard to know whether his appointment with Rio is merely symbolic, as organisers battle with negative publicity, following a wave of drug-related murders - more than 40 in the last month.
Giulani was appointed by State Governor Sergio Cabral and has also held meetings with Rio mayor Eduardo Paes during a visit to the city this week.
Giuliani oversaw a drastic drop in crime in New York during his tenure as mayor from 1994 to 2002 but is most widely known for his leadership during the days that followed the September 11th terrorist attack.
