The Dubai 2025 Grand Prix drew to a thrilling conclusion, showcasing both seasoned athletes and promising newcomers at the impressively revamped Dubai Club for People of Determination. Over four electrifying days, the event highlighted the vibrant competitive spirit that sets the stage for an exciting year ahead, culminating in the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India, from 26 September to 5 October.

In the opening act of the competition, Swiss athletics legend Marcel Hug delivered a powerful statement. Dominating the men’s T54 finals, he secured gold medals in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m races. This victory marks yet another chapter in Hug’s storied career, as he continued his exceptional form from the recent Sharjah International Open.

“Happy to start the year with some gold medals,” expressed Hug, a seven-time Paralympic gold medallist. “I am looking forward to the season to have some amazing races at the major marathons.” It’s a sentiment echoed by countless athletes who aspire for greatness, with the prospect of prestigious marathons on the horizon.

Yet, the spotlight did not solely rest on Hug. His compatriot, Patricia Eachus, stepped into the limelight in the absence of the celebrated Catherine Debrunner. Eachus triumphed in the women’s wheelchair T54 races, clinching gold in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m – a remarkable feat showcasing her burgeoning talent.

Among the champions from Paris 2024, Xiaoyan Wen from China sprinted to glory in the women’s 100m T37/38 final. Her former teammate, Lijuan Zou, dazzled the crowd with impressive performances in the F34 women’s throw events. Their accomplishments reflect the deep bench of talent and competitive spirit flourishing in Asian athletics.

From Belgium, Maxime Carabin shone, capturing three gold medals in the men’s wheelchair T52 races: 100m, 400m, and 1500m. Meanwhile, Athanasios Ghavelas of Greece showcased resilience, winning gold in the men’s 100m T11. Despite facing challenges with his guide, Giannis Nyfantopoulos, stumbling at the start, Ghavelas remains optimistic: “We look forward to doing well at the World Championships.”

Iranian champion Saeid Afrooz also celebrated victory in Dubai, adding to the rich tapestry of talent on display during the Grand Prix.

In this fiercely competitive field, it’s essential to highlight the spirit of the host nation, the UAE, as they made their own mark at the competition. The UAE excelled by securing eight gold medals in its bid to foster a more inclusive sports culture.

Promising athlete Mohamad Othman took centre stage by snagging gold in the men’s 100m wheelchair T34 final on the opening day. He followed this with bronze finishes in the 400m and 800m races, emerging as a new star in the world of wheelchair racing.

Encouragingly, prominent UAE athletes like Maryam Al Zeyoudi, the Kobe 2024 world champion in the women’s shot put F40, and fellow competitor Sara Aljneibi, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist in the women’s shot put F33, lived up to local expectations, further boosting national pride.

Organised under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this season-opening Grand Prix witnessed an impressive gathering of 370 para-athletes representing 42 nations. Such numbers not only reflect the growing popularity of para-athletics but also speak volumes about the commitment of nations to enhance inclusivity in sports.

As the dust settles on this inaugural event of the season, the focus shifts towards New Delhi for the upcoming Grand Prix, marking India’s first hosting of a Para Athletic Grand Prix. This event promises to serve as a rehearsal for the World Para Athletics Championships later this year.

The Dubai Grand Prix not only marked the dawn of a new season but also ignited a beacon of hope and excitement for upcoming competitions. As these para-athletes step onto the international stage, we’re reminded of the indomitable spirit and relentless determination that exemplify the essence of Para sports. What stories will unfold in New Delhi? Only time will tell, but if the excitement of Dubai is any indication, we’re in for a remarkable year ahead.

All results from the championships can be sourced through official channels, keeping fans and enthusiasts alike engaged with every running moment. With a new generation of stars emerging, one can only look forward to witnessing their meteoric rise in the coming events.
