Less than three months after hosting the 2024 IM 70.3 World Championships, Taupō is gearing up to welcome athletes and their supporters from across the globe for the 41st edition of Ironman New Zealand. This much-anticipated event will take place on Saturday, 1 March 2025, and will also feature IM 70.3 New Zealand. With over 2,000 registered participants expected for both events, excitement is already building.

Wayne Reardon, Race Director for IM New Zealand and IM 70.3 New Zealand, expresses enthusiasm about the upcoming event and the community spirit that surrounds it. “On behalf of our team and the Taupō community, I’m delighted to welcome athletes and their whānau to the 2025 IM New Zealand and IM 70.3 New Zealand,” Reardon stated. “Taupō has a deep connection to this race, and every year we are inspired by the determination, passion, and camaraderie that make this event so special.”

He further noted, “Whether it’s your first Ironman or you’re returning to chase new goals, you’ll find a beautiful course, a supportive community, and an atmosphere like no other. We can’t wait to see you on the start line and celebrate your journey to the finish.”

The importance of the Ironman events to the local community cannot be overstated. Taupō District Council Mayor David Trewavas echoed this sentiment, stating, “Hosting the Ironman events is always a highlight for our community. The energy and excitement that the athletes and their supporters bring to Taupō is unmatched. We are proud to showcase our beautiful town and provide a world-class experience for everyone involved.”

A Legacy of Athletic Excellence

As the second oldest Ironman event in the world, Ironman New Zealand has long been a coveted race for triathletes worldwide. This year continues that tradition, with nearly half of the anticipated participants coming from international locales, representing 50 nations. This global reach adds a rich diversity to the competition, showcasing the universal appeal and inclusivity of the sport. It mirrors the ethos found in the Paralympics, where athletes from various backgrounds transcend barriers and defy expectations.

Among the elite competitors making their way to Taupō are notable professional triathletes. From the USA, Joceyln McCauley, a two-time IM New Zealand champion, will be competing alongside GB’s Joe Skipper, the 2020 champion, and Fenella Langridge, the 2023 Western Australia champion. The presence of these stalwarts promises to elevate the competition’s intensity.

They will share the start line with some of New Zealand’s finest athletes: Braden Currie, a two-time champion; Mike Phillips, also a double winner; Ben Hamilton, who secured third place in last year’s race; and Jack Moody, the 2022 IM 70.3 New Zealand champion. Their local roots not only bring home advantages but also a fierce determination to excel on their own turf, heightening the stakes for everyone involved.

A Gruelling Challenge Awaits

Athletes will tackle a demanding course that begins with a 3.8km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupō, setting the stage for what becomes a physically and mentally taxing day. Following the swim, competitors will embark on a 180km bike ride through the picturesque countryside surrounding Taupō, testing their endurance and strategic pacing. The final leg features a 42.2km run along the lakefront, where supporters line the path, cheering to inspire their heroes toward the finish line.

This event is not merely about racing; it reflects a shared journey of challenge and triumph akin to the athletes at the Paralympics, where grit and determination shine through. For many participants, Ironman New Zealand represents a metaphorical mountain, one that demands not only physical prowess but also unyielding spirit, resilience, and community support.

In the world of triathlons, every competitor has a story. Some are returning to pursue new personal bests, while others are embarking on their Ironman journey for the first time. What drives them? Is it the thrill of competition, the allure of camaraderie, or the immense sense of achievement that comes after crossing the finish line?

As athletes prepare for the beginning of the race, the atmosphere pulsates with vibrant energy—an electric mix of excitement, anxiety, and anticipation. For many, the countdown to the starting gun marks not just a date on the calendar but a moment that has been years in the making.

As Taupō prepares to host another chapter in this storied event, it stands not just as a picturesque backdrop but as an integral part of each athlete’s experience, embodying the spirit of perseverance that defines those who dare to dream. Whether competing or supporting, everyone involved will continue to play a crucial role in the rich tapestry of the Ironman legacy. Are you ready to join the journey? The start line awaits.
